The lack of space hampered plans and, instead, a school for Reception, Year One and Year Two was opened in the former Docklands Settlements Community Centre in 2011.

An Isle of Dogs free school celebrating its first birthday has doubled pupil intake for the new September term, to meet massive demand for places.

Principal Sarah Counter is preparing to lead the second year of teaching at Canary Wharf College, a primary school founded by parents under the Government's Free School Scheme, in the heart of the Docklands.

Parents have until Friday to apply for a place in an independent free school on the Isle of Dogs after Michael Gove gave it the green light this week.

The Education Secretary approved Canary Wharf College's business plan and the school is set to open its doors in September this year.
