A man was saved from drowning in a dramatic rescue operation in the River Thames on Wednesday.

Teams from Tower Hamlets Police, the Air Support Unit and the Marine Policing Unit all attended the scene to the east of the Isle of Dogs at 5.40am after reports of a man in distress.

The blaze damaged a restaurant and flats on West India Dock Road.

10 firefighters attended the scene on Belvedere Mews, Blackheath this afternoon and the woman was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Twenty firefighters were called to the blaze on King George Avenue just after 10pm yesterday night.

aa-police.jpgEmergency services have resumed the search for a man's body in the River Thames.

They were called out at around 8.50pm yesterday after the man was reported to have fallen in close to the Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge and the University of East London. The search was called off after two hours and resumed today.
