Shocking figures reveal the population of the Isle of Dogs has nearly doubled in the last decade - and could be set to rocket in the future with a flurry of development on the horizon.

The numbers were highlighted by Cllr Peter Golds who says there is a major threat of overdevelopment on the Island, which surrounds Canary Wharf.


Local authorities have pledged to expand schools and boost the number of pupil places at the start of the September term, in a bid to tackle rocketing populations in both Tower Hamlets and Newham.

Census figures pinpointed the two boroughs as the only areas in the country where population growth had exceeded 20 per cent, continuing an upward trend.


People power has won after plans for a 12-storey tower block in Poplar were deferred.

Over 650 Virginia Quay residents petitioned against the proposal by Cube Developments, which was last week heard by the planning committee of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
