Barclays announces drop in profits

Banking giant Barclays has reported a 7% fall in profits for the first half of this year caused mainly by a drop in income from its investment banking business.

Total profits for the period were at £3.35billion.

Barclays has announced it is to cut 19,000 jobs worldwide - with around 10,000 of them in the UK.

The group will shed 2,000 investment bank roles this year, with another 5,000 to go by 2016. About a third of the investment bank - formerly Barclays Capital - is based in the UK, with the vast majority in Canary Wharf.


Stepping off the Tube and into Canary Wharf, it's the twinkling office lights and skyscrapers filling the expanse that makes gazing up to the skies inevitable.

The people responsible for such dashes of colour adorning Barclays in Churchill Place, the warming glow of One Canada Square and those crazy-coloured chairs in the chill areas are being celebrated at a one-day event.
