The historic SS Robin will be permanently docked underneath the cable car after its proposal was given approval by Newham Council's planning committee.

Both the Siemens Crystal and Emirates Air Line were among supporters of the move at the meeting on Tuesday night.

The world's last steam coaster, the SS Robin, could finally get permission for a permanent mooring in a prime tourist spot in the Royal Docks.

Connaught Tunnel142.JPGDismantling work will begin this month on a historic pump house that has been part of the Royal Docks landscape since 1873.

The Grade I listed building is being removed by Crossrail as part of its construction work on the Connaught Tunnel, preparing it to become part of the new Abbey Wood branch.

crossrail.jpgCrossrail has adopted a new approach to the restoration of the Connaught Tunnel under the Royal Docks which it says is safer and more efficient.

The dock will be drained after next year's London Boat Show to expose the top of the tunnel so enlargement work can be carried out using the "cut and cover" process.
