Organisers of last month's Poppy Appeal have praised Canary Wharf commuters after they donated over £50,000 in just one day.

The total was reached on November 1, London Poppy Day, when the Royal Navy held a collection on the estate. Including the rest of the Isle of Dogs, £70,000 was handed over in those 24 hours.

Mayor Boris Johnson promoted London Poppy Day in Canary Wharf with the aid of a Royal Navy RIB and HMS Severn.

Thursday will see more than 2,000 volunteers take to the streets to sell the Remembrance poppy at 70 Tube and rail stations, aiming to raise £1million in 12 hours.

I've been selling poppies again this year at Canary Wharf DLR station to the early morning commuters and I'm proud to say that we've been doing a roaring trade. Every year, credit crunch or not, I've been truly impressed by how generous Wharfers are. But I wonder how many know just how much bureaucracy there is involved in being allowed to stand there?
