The figures were highlighted during a Parliamentary debate this week.

Poplar and Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick has resigned from the shadow cabinet after speaking out against Labour party policy on Syria.

He quit after saying he would vote against an offensive on the Middle East country even if it was proved its government was behind the recent chemical weapons attack on citizens.

Politicians have condemned an English Defence League march planned for Tower Hamlets this summer and urged the police to intervene.

The borough's Labour Party responded after the right-wing group announced on Monday it would hold a demo in east London on August 24.

Labour councillors are calling for an investigation amid claims an attempted break-in took place at their party offices at Tower Hamlets Town Hall.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on the weekend of March 9 and 10 - days before the Council Budget meeting - and the group is calling on the council to ensure the area is secure.

The shortlisted politicians who will battle it out to be the Labour Party candidate in next year's Tower Hamlets mayoral election has been unveiled.

An interview panel decided Helal Abbas, John Biggs, Sirajul Islam and Rachael Saunders would face the party vote in a ballot on April 6.
