England play Jamaica in the Co-operative International series, with the first of the three matches taking place in Greenwich on February 22.

00feb28Photo by Val Lyons.jpgTHE little-known story of the heroic Maroons community that resisted slavery in Jamaica is being visually told in a new exhibition at Museum in Docklands.

A colourful display of more than 50 intimate photographs and a short film throw the spotlight on the self-governing Maroons, who were the first free slaves in the western hemisphere.

The runaways escaped and outwitted the British and Spanish in the mountain regions of Jamaica. Led by Cudjoe, they signed a peace treaty with Captain Guthrie of the British forces in 1739 to gain freedom.

Today, a thousand of their ancestors still live in Accompong, three hours from the nearest parish of Montego Bay and outside the jurisdiction of the government and police. The area has not experienced crime for more than 200 years.
