It started out as a tiny local authority initiative screening a handful of locally-made short films. Now the East End Film Festival (EEFF) has become one of the UK's largest international events of its kind.

This month sees the festival celebrating its 13th anniversary with 15 world, eight European, 25 UK and 15 London premieres.


Of all the Big Ideas bequeathed by the Blair government, the one that has intrigued foreign leaders more than most is his Delivery Unit, headed up by Sir Michael Barber in the early 2000s.

The idea that success is the mundane application of a handful of disciplines ("government by routine, not government by spasm") may not appeal to a politician's ego, the glossy brochure industry or the media but "it works", says Sir Michael.

A man alleged to have made videos glorifying the murder of Lee Rigby, including one called "Muslim laughs at British soldier killing", is due to appear in court on Monday.
