A man was rescued from the Thames at Greenwich Pier last night after a police helicopter detected him by his body heat.

An RNLI crew from Tower lifeboat station and a marine police unit were called to reports of a man in the water just before 10pm and began to search for him using spotlights.

A man in his 60s was pulled from the river at Greenwich yesterday after he was seen floating face down.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's marine unit discovered the man lying motionless in the water at Greenwich Pier just after 2.30pm.

A man was saved from drowning in a dramatic rescue operation in the River Thames on Wednesday.

Teams from Tower Hamlets Police, the Air Support Unit and the Marine Policing Unit all attended the scene to the east of the Isle of Dogs at 5.40am after reports of a man in distress.

The 40-year-old went missing last Friday when the tugboat Chiefton he was crewing on capsized close to Greenwich Pier. A coroner ruled his cause of death as drowning.
