Tower Hamlets policiticians have welcomed news Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll have left the English Defence League but say celebrations are premature.

The duo quit the far right group on Tuesday, with Robinson saying he would pursue non-violent and democratic means to challenge Islamist extremism.

Saturday's English Defence League demonstration and the counter-protest organised by United Against Fascism saw police arrest 300 people.

Among them was Stephen Lennon - otherwise known as EDL leader Tommy Robinson who was taken into custody by officers for a public order offences.

The English Defence League's attempt to overturn a ban on it entering Tower Hamlets was dismissed in a legal hearing on Friday.

It means the group will be prevented from going into the borough during Saturday's march, following the Met Police imposing restrictions.

The Metropolitan Police have banned the English Defence League from entering Tower Hamlets this weekend due to a threat of "serious disorder".

The group had planned to march from London Bridge to Whitechapel Road on Saturday but the Met has decided it would stop the procession going into the east London borough.
