Plans for a residential skyscraper next to Canary Wharf have surfaced after an Irish property tycoon bought a site in West India Quay.
Tom Ryan is understood to have paid £100million for the land on Hertsmere Road, which has previously received planning permission for a 63-storey skyscraper.
A proposed new development on West India Quay could add to the area's housing stock if the findings of a review are taken up.
The Hertsmere House site, at the western end of the Quay, has been earmarked for the 63-storey Columbus Tower, which was conceived as an office building. But a review by architects Squire and Partners has suggested a mixed use tower would be better for the area.
It was set to become the towering landmark of West India Quay but the recession put plans to build Columbus Tower on hold.
The 777ft tall tower would have rivalled One Canada Square in height, and was to have been built on the current Hertsmere House site at the western end of West India Quay. Falling demand for office space saw it shelved at the end of 2009, but the project is to be revived.
Columbus Tower has been approved by Boris Johnson, securing a £4million contribution to Crossrail.
