At around 10.30am, just after breakfast has settled, the buzz of the first latte fades and the realisation dawns upon tens of thousands of Wharfers that the day will be long and relentless and cruel, a murmur of conversation begins.

The conversation takes place at water coolers, at corridor junctions, across snaking wires in server rooms and over walls of note-festooned monitors.

By Tabitha Ronson

My boss has been off work sick. As usual, whether she's ill or otherwise, her workload has mostly fallen upon my desk and - as is the general custom - Young Colleague has been giving the impression she is the one shouldering the burden.

Normally this would irritate me to the point where I'd need to run to the loo lock myself inside a cubicle - and scream silently.

Standing at the front of Jamie's Italian in Churchill Place, Gennaro Contaldo stops dead from his exhibition of pasta making as if someone has struck him with a grave insult.

He had only been asked about a particular aspect of his TV series. The emotive chef's eyes burn as if he is about to launch into an exhaustive tirade.
