Do Vassilakis-König-Sasso Cosmico (2007)

An egg-shaped creation, so suited to its location it seems always to have been there, has appeared on Westferry Circus.

The sculpture was not commissioned specifically for the gardens but the site of Sasso Cosmico, which translates from Italian as “Cosmic Stone?, is an essential part of the work.

Positioned on a line from One Canada Square to the river, it ties the two together. The curved polished surface reflects its surroundings in their entirety, from the immediate foliage to the distant architecture of Canary Wharf to the sky above.

The garden’s three flower beds were originally designed with concrete bases to accommodate art work but it is likely this will be the only piece.

Having spent many years living in Greece, Vassilakis-König’s sculptures are influenced by ancient myths and Greeco-Roman culture. Her friendships with Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Pierre Fernandez Arman also inspired her work.
