Ron Arad - Big Blue (2000)

Completed in 2000, this dramatic sculpture has a practical as well as aesthetic purpose.

Above ground it is the visual focus of the park, below it lets light in to the Canada Place shopping mall.

Reminiscent of a flying saucer, this is a glass fibre structure, resting on a glazed circular plinth.

Big Blue was designed by Ron Arad. The Tel Aviv-born artist is known for his innovative furniture and ground breaking architectural design.

Arad came to England in 1973 to study architecture and is also responsible for Windwand, a towering, needle shaped form on Canary Riverside.

He is head of the design products department at the Royal College of Art.
