Overall crime is down in Tower Hamlets, yet reported rapes have increased.

Between June 2013 and June 2014, 33 more rapes were reported compared to the same period the previous year.

Detective Insp Paul Callister of Tower Hamlets CID said: "While police would want to see a decrease in the number of incidents of rape occurring, the increase in rape reporting is something the police actively encourages.

"The expertise of the [sex crime] police unit Sapphire and the Haven centres has given people confidence to come forward.

"Having a Haven in Whitechapel that is easily accessible to the people of Tower Hamlets has helped to promote the reporting of rape in our borough."

There were sharp decreases in robberies and burglaries with 448 fewer burglaries and 243 fewer robberies.

Borough commander Chief Supt Dave Stringer said: "This decrease has been made through identifying repeat offenders and working tirelessly to bring them to justice well as targeting second hand retailers where stolen items are being disposed of."
