Millwall Rugby Club looking to build on last year's success
Millwall are keen to maintain their impressive home record to announce their return to Essex One with a bang.
Relegation to the second tier in 2013 was followed by instant bounce back with a second place finish.
Captain Shaun Cook, 22, said he was optimistic about the coming season.
"We have set ourselves a target of top half in the league and to win all our home games," he said.
"If we were looking at getting a good shout of winning it then we'll re-assess those targets but right now we've got to be realistic.
"We won all our home games this year and our aim is to do it again. We get a good crowd of people coming here supporting us and it's great to have the opportunity to play on our own grass."
The side came runners up to May & Baker in a two horse race last year. Cook said it was an impressive season with the team in transition.
"We had a number of new players integrating themselves in the first and second teams," said the captain.
"It was about getting ourselves back to the standard we should be at. We started well but we had to get the job done and chased hard all the way."
The team play at Millwall Park, just south of Canary Wharf.
And with backing from sponsors including Chattels of London, Canary Wharf Group and Carrot Cars as well as strong local ties including with Friends of Island Gardens, Cook believes they should be aiming even higher.
"People gauge where we are as a club from our first team and we're in Essex One, which is the highest we've been but we've got to look at getting to the next level up - London Three," he said.
The new season kicks off on September 13 with an away clash at Burnham RC. The side's first home game, against local rivals East London RFC, takes place the week after.
