A bridge at a 'mini Manhattan' currently under development has been installed to provide greater pedestrian links between Tower Hamlets and Newham.

Property company Ballymore put the 80 metre crossing in place over the River Lea at the City Island site for residents to walk and cycle over when the development opens. The scheme is due for completion by 2016.

The bridge will allow people easy access to Canning Town station.

Designed by Davies, Maguire & Whitby the crossing, which was put in place on Tuesday, creates a vital link for those looking to move into the 1,700 new apartments on the 12 acre 'island' neighbourhood at Bow Creek.

John Mulryan, Managing Director UK, Ballymore Group, says; "Ballymore is a company that creates something more than just bricks and mortar. We make places, districts - even communities.

"We are delighted to offer this gift of a Bridge to the boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets and Londoners alike".

The development promises waterside parks, bars and restaurants, art studios, boutique shops, a school and a private residents' club.
