Working Mum: Catching up with the school gate goss
COMMENTBy Tabitha Ronson
The school gates were alive with gossip on Monday - well, we have all had a week off so there's a lot to catch up on.
Drop-off is better than an episode of The Real Wives Of Atlanta (yes, including the one with the Kenya/Porsha brawl).
Put a group of women together and whatever their creed, colour or capital status you can be certain they'll be backbiting, scandal-mongering and salacious gossip - in bucket loads.
Looking back at my life pre-Master A it seems so strangely empty. How did I ever exist? Although, I was always on time for work.
Rumour has it the mum who is embroiled in an acrimonious court battle over child support with her son's dad, recently moved in a guy she met on the Internet and, after only a few weeks of dating, is pregnant. Yes, Real Wives has nothing on our school gates.
I was walking into school with Master A when one of the mum's I'm particularly friendly with sidled up to me and presented me with the news.
According to this mum, she had heard it from another mum, who had heard it from another, who had heard it from another who had looked after the son of the "expectant" mum one day over the holidays.
"She was throwing up violently so she's got to be!"
Another mum joined us. "Have you heard about...?"
By the time I arrived at the main school entrance I was surrounded by six mums each sharing various pieces of information.
It was like being on a City trading floor, with each nugget of information being snapped up by the hungry purveyors of gossip.
The mum in question pitched up. Trying not to make it obvious I was scoping her belly, I asked her how the holidays went.
"I was as sick as a dog..."
The other mums drew in a collective breath.
"... I think it must have been from a takeaway prawn curry."
Working Mum, still loving the daily drama of the school run.
