"Skull Cracker" arrested in Tower Hamlets after going on the run

A fugitive armed robber nicknamed the "Skull Cracker" has been arrested in Tower Hamlets.

Kent Police began a search for Michael Wheatley after he failed to return to HMP Standford Hill on May 3, after being released on temporary licence.

DCI Ann Lisseman from Kent Police said: "We are no longer looking for Michael Wheatley. We would like to thank our colleagues at Metropolitan Police Service, Surrey Police, and the public for their assistance with our enquiries."

A 55-year-old man and 53-year-old man were arrested today on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The 55 year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of being unlawfully at large.

Detectives were earlier investigating an armed robbery at Chelsea Building Society branch in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey.
