Latest figures show homelessness in Tower Hamlets has rocketed 109% since 2010.

Poplar and Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick has labelled the rise "a scandal". The figures from the House of Commons Library record the number of homeless in the borough going up from 156 to 326.

It represents a worrying growth compared to the rise across the whole of London of 40%

Mr Fitzpatrick called on the Government and London Mayor Boris Johnson to push for more affordable housing to tackle the problem.

"Housing is the number one issue in Tower Hamlets but we've seen very little from action from the government or Boris," he said. "A lack of affordable housing means people are being priced out of the market and onto the streets.

"It's a scandal when the number of homeless in the borough has doubled. We're at a critical point where we can act now or face the consequences of more homeless people on our streets."

The figures show the number of homeless across the capital hit 6,948 last year.
