A motorcyclist involved in a collision which lead to the closure of the Blackwall Tunnel on Thursday has 'potentially life-changing' injuries, according to police.

Detectives have launched an appeal for information into the incident which caused widespread traffic chaos across London.

The tunnel was closed northbound at 8am after the motorbike collided with a van. It did not reopen for around five hours.

An ambulance took the 37-year-old man to hospital with serious leg injuries. His condition is described as stable.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information should call 020 8285 1574.

Meanwhile, AA tweeted a photo of traffic queues at mid-afternoon across central London, which came as a result of the earlier closure.

Transport for London said by evening rush-hour there was still heavy traffic heading towards Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels, as well as the Woolwich Ferry.
