This fascinating view from above in 1938 shows Canary Wharf as it once was - a vast area of boats and cargo sheds - unrecognisable from the modern day business district.

Fast forward 75 years and the area and you can the incredible transition which has taken place, with huge skycrapers now in place.

The original photo was from the Britain From Above website. The second was taken from a helicopter in 2003 so does not include 25 Churchill Place, which is due to open next year.

Britain from Above features some of the oldest and most valuable images of the Aerofilms Collection, a unique and important archive of aerial photographs. You can download images, share memories, and add information. By the end of the project in 2014, 95,000 images taken between 1919 and 1953 will be available online.
