Match Report: Charlton 0 Derby County 2
Charlton suffered their fifth defeat of the season at The Valley as in-form Derby County left with all three points.
Goals from Jamie Ward and Craig Bryson gave the visitors victory to leave the Addicks in no doubt they were in for a relegation battle this season.
A tentative start to the game saw chances limited. A Michael Morrison drive well fielded by Lee Grant was the only shot on goal in the first 10 minutes.
And it was the Addicks who looked more confident.
Dale Stephens had the next chance, but he sliced a volley over from 12 yards after Cameron Stewart.
Derby then came alive with striker Chris Martin's long range effort deflected just wide of Ben Alnwick's post.
At the other end a cheeky Danny Green free-kick was pushed over by Grant.
The visitors went into the game as the division's form team, winning their last five, and after a slow start were beginning to play some good possession football. But Charlton's energy was limiting County's effectiveness.
In the end it needed a huge slice of luck for the visitors to snatch the lead.
Dorian Dervite brought down Chris Martin on the edge of the box. Ward's free-kick then took a wicked deflection off the wall, wrong-footing Alnwick, who could only watch the ball bobble into the net.
With that goal the complexion of the game changed. Derby looked confident and Charlton were anxious.
The Rams nearly doubled their lead just before the break when Alnwick was forced to tip over a Bryson piledriver.
The second-half began with Charlton again looking the brightest. Stephens' pulled his shot just wide in the opening couple of minutes
But as Derby settled down and began looking comfortable they nearly doubled their lead on the hour when Ward rattled the bar after being set up by Martin.
Simon Dawkins then curled one over from the edge of the box as the Rams looked increasingly dangerous.
Chris Powell responded by throwing on Callum Harriott and Simon Church.
The Addicks looked more lively as a result and defender Morrison came so close to the equaliser, heading a Yann Kermorgant cross just the wrong side of the post.
Then on 80 minutes Church was slipped through by Wilson but Grant pushed his shot away.
Time was ticking by and Charlton were taking risks. It was one of those that allowed substitute Conor Sammon the chance to play through Bryson who chipped the ball over Alnwick for the second.
The defeat means Charlton remain in 21st position, just a point outside the relegation zone.
