Fan's Roar: A bleak international break for Millwall
Ian Toal of Millwall Supporters Club
After the amazing capitulation on the south coast on Saturday, Steve Lomas and his team are facing a much different week than they would have had they saw out the 2-0 lead.
Things were looking good when we raced two goals ahead within 10 minutes thanks to strikes from Martyn Waghorn and Liam Trotter.
That was a great response to the thumping we took at Birmingham on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately we didn't see it out until half time and we let them back in the game with a goal on 43 minutes.
We then threw all our hard work away when we let in three more during a mad 15 minutes in the second half in which time we lost Alan Dunne to a second booking after a handball, which subsequently saw Bournemouth score from the spot.
Bournemouth netted another penalty in injury time to complete the scoring giving us a 5-2 defeat and, worryingly, nine goals conceded in our last two matches.
Lomas is going to have to go back to the drawing board in terms of the defence at least before our next match after the international break when we entertain top of the table QPR.
Mark Beevers being out injured is a seemingly big loss and losing Dunney again to suspension won't help the situation.
But the players need to stand up and be counted. I would even take a nil nil now as a step in the right direction!
Shane Lowry sat on the bench against Bournemouth so he might well be an option to come back into the side.
Jack Smith is out of favour with Lomas after a rumoured falling out but maybe the manager needs to swallow his pride and bring Smith back in to cover for Dunney.
More often than not you get a whole-hearted performance from Smith who is also a decent ball player - so a couple of qualities that the team needs at the moment.
Ultimately whoever the personnel that Lomas selects, they need to tighten up as our goal difference is the worst in the division bar Yeovil and Barnsley, two sides who you expect to be fighting relegation all season long.
This is a tough league and we can't keep defending as poorly as we currently are, otherwise we will have another terrible relegation battle on our hands. And Lomas will be looking for new work sooner rather than later.
