Plans for community centre in Island Gardens Park are withdrawn
Residents fighting to protect the future of an Isle of Dogs Park are celebrating after the latest application to develop a section of the site was withdrawn.
Proposals to create a portacabin-style community centre in Island Gardens Park had sparked much concern among the community, with a petition against the scheme gathering more than 2,000 signatures.
Yesterday, Tuesday, Tower Hamlets Borough Council confirmed the applicant had withdrawn its plans.
A council spokesperson added: "As is usual protocol, we have informed everyone who made written representations about the application."
Eric Pemberton, one of the campaigners, told The Wharf it was "brilliant news".
He said: "We will make sure it never happens again."
Campaigners will meet tomorrow (Thursday) at Poplar, Blackwall and District rowing Club to discuss setting up charity Friends of Island Gardens - designed to safeguard the park's future.
It starts at 7.30pm.
