Housewife Caroline McKenna was reading The Wharf when she spotted a competition to win a life-changing head-to-toe makeover worth up to £25,000.

Together with her 11-year-old daughter Leanne she filled out the application form and soon she was invited as one of 32 people through to the interview stage with experts in cosmetic dentistry, dermatology and laser eye surgery.

The judges were won over by the story of the 44-year-old from the Isle of Dogs who felt she had no time for herself while also running a busy household.

"When they told me I was shortlisted I was delighted but when I heard I was a winner I was gobsmacked," said Caroline, one of four winners. "To say I am thrilled is an understatement.

"The way I felt about myself definitely held me back."

Caroline, who is also mum to five-year-old Jamesie, needs glasses but doesn't wear them out of the home, rates her "lopsided smile" three out of 10 and has not had her nails done since her wedding day 12 years ago.

Treatment, including putting in permanent implantable contact lenses, has already begun and Caroline's complete new look will be unveiled at an event on March 21, hosted by TV presenter Jeff Brazier.

Buoyed by being a winner of the Dream Makeover Essex competition she is now looking ahead and, with new found confidence, is considering a future in teaching.

"I was embarrassed about my smile but that's all changing and in any case I am smiling inside about it all," she said.

"Jeff was so kind and made me feel very comfortable even though I was so nervous to meet him. He is really friendly like a brother and very down to earth."
