Looking for a hobby? Have a passion for London's waterways?

Then you're the kind of person the Canal and River Trust is looking for. The charity, which monitors the country's waterways, is appealing for east Londoners to volunteer as lock keepers.

The job description includes helping boaters through the locks and providing "a polite and friendly welcome".

An appeal last year led by actor Brian Blessed saw 250 people sign up in England. Now the charity wants to double that figure.

In east London it's looking for volunteers to be lock keeper at Old Ford Lock, next to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

London coordinator for the Canal and River Trust, Deborah Vidler, said: "Working outdoors and staying fit have been a key incentive for people, as has a sense of pride in knowing they're helping protect this 250 year old working heritage.

"It's extremely important to us that we offer volunteers something appealing where they feel like they're making a difference which this role certainly does."
