Demand from Wharfers keen to seek advice in the family law sector has prompted a leading firm to create a new base in Canada Square.

Solicitors Howell Jones built on its presence in Surrey and The Strand by opening the doors to its first office on the estate, on January 2.

With a four-strong team headed up by partner Simi Kalsi, the company's family solicitors specialise in financial settlements, divorce, separation, prenuptial, postnuptial and children, while a separate employment law team offers further specialist advice.

Simi said the company's latest office was driven by client convenience.

"A lot of my clients are based around here and when I did my research, I found there was a gap in the market for family lawyers. There was only one other in the vicinity," said the 36-year-old, who joined the Howell Jones team eight years ago.

"Our team is all very specialised. I am a member of Resolution [a national organisation for family lawyers] and specialise in collaborative law."

She said that trust and reputation were vital in the family law sector.

"You have a different relationship with family lawyers - you have to confide in them about your personal life. It's important to be able to connect and have that relationship with your family lawyer.

"I like to think the clients can have that kind of a relationship with me We're not hard, corporate figures."

The partnership also extends to the solicitors' working hours, which are "flexible to suit the individual"

The opening coincides with Christmas, a traditional time for family strife and new beginnings.

Simi said: "It is one of the busiest times. After the Christmas break people may figure out things aren't working out with one another or it may be positive things, like people coming in for prenuptial agreements."

With the wealth on the estate, this is a growth area.

"We do get a lot of prenuptial agreements," she said.

"There are a lot of bankers getting them to protect their assets and that's what people want to do nowadays going into marriage."
