The driver of a car involved in a collision on the Isle of Dogs, which left a female pedestrian with serious head injuries, failed to stop at the scene, police have revealed.

They later contacted officers over the incident but no arrests have yet been made and enquiries are continuing.

The 38-year-old victim was taken to hospital after being hit by a car at Westferry Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The street was closed off until early evening while officers carried out their investigations.

A Met Police spokeswoman said: "It seems as if the car did make off initially but the driver later contacted police."
