A gang of around 20 people are being hunted by police after a man was shot dead in Woolwich.

The murder of the 35-year-old took place on Monday evening at around 6.20pm. Marcus Innocent was shot in the stomach and pronounced dead at the scene near his home in Kingsman Street.

Prior to the shooting, a member of the group police are looking for was believed to have attacked Marcus, before more of the gang - made up of white and black individuals - joined in the assault.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Le Pere, of the Trident Gang Crime Command, said: "I appeal to anyone who was in the area of Lord Warwick Street and Kingsman Street that evening who saw this group or who may have seen the events leading up to this murder.

"We believe the victim, who lived locally, was attacked by a group of people congregating in Lord Warwick Street near to the junction with Kingsman Street. However at this early stage the motive for this murder is unclear.

"If you witnessed this shooting, or the events leading up to or immediately after it, please call the Incident Room."
