Approval has been given for a 399 apartment development to be built on the east of the Isle of Dogs.

Tower Hamlets councillors gave the New Union Wharf scheme the thumbs-up at a strategic development committee meeting last Thursday.

East Homes is knocking down 189 socially-rented flats built in the 70's on the east of the island to make way for the three new blocks which rise to 14 storeys.

The developer will be looking at a staged build. The scheme is said to deliver nearly 65 per cent affordable housing, but after the rehousing of the existing tenants this would equate to just over 30 per cent of the remaining apartments.
