Stadium on shortlist for structural award

The Olympic Stadium could soon replicate the success of medal-winning athletes with an award of its own.

The east London venue has been shortlisted as a nominee for the prestigious 2012 Structural Awards, hosted by The Institution of Structural Engineers.

With a capacity of 55,000 seats in Olympic mode, the stadium was a hub for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events.

Its structure allows it to be transformed into a smaller venue, to accommodate 25,000 visitors, and institution representatives noted it provided an appropriate response to the legacy of the Games and sustainability objectives.

The winning design will be announced on November 2.
