Community learning champions in Poplar were treated to a sparkling celebration in recognition of their hard work.

Resident Jan Evans was selected by representatives from the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) as the first winner of its Celebrate 2012 Party Pack competition, to mark London's Olympic summer and the service's 25th birthday.

And Jan had no hesitation in choosing a worthwhile cause to benefit from the bumper selection of goodies, which included an iPod docking station, camcorder, party plates, bunting and party poppers.

Armed with her party essentials and a donation from Near Neighbours, she decked out her local church hall to mark the final class of a women's group, created to teach English in the area.

"Winning the DLR party pack was very exciting because I was able to share it with the wonderful women within our community," said Jan.

"I was also looking forward to learning how to use the iPod docking station and camcorder, as I didn't have a camera or portable sound system before this."

Sandy Shing, DLR marketing campaigns officer, added: "We wanted to help our community celebrate everything that is happening in 2012 and mark the completion of the £850million project of upgrades and extensions."
