A woman run over on a pedestrian crossing in Newham at the weekend has died.

The 27-year-old pedestrian was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries following the incident in Silvertown Way after midnight on Saturday evening. She died at the Royal London on Tuesday morning.

The victim was found by police opposite Canning Town Bus Garage. Officers said she was using the pedestrian crossing when she was hit by a white van, which failed to stop at the scene.

The vehicle was found nearby. A man voluntarily attended Forest Gate Police Station on Sunday and was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and dangerous driving.

He was bailed to return at a date in July.

Witnesses are asked to call the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Chadwell Heath on 020 8597 4874.
