Canary Wharf Group is in discussions with a campaign group for an alternative route through Westferry following the closure of a much used riverside walkway.

The company had to close the path alongside the JP Morgan-owned construction site in order to carry out works to strengthen the riverbank wall.

It's likely to remain closed for around 18 months.

Leader of the campaigners Professor Ed Berman said: "The group is obviously very upset that in this Olympic year they are closing the walkway.

"It's come at a time we thought they should make an extra effort to keep it open.

"However, we understand the project is a vast one and they've given us assurances they will put in an alternative route for pedestrians that would not take people through the Canary Wharf estate just to get to the river bus pier."

Talks are taking place between the group and CWG, which is carrying out the construction works on behalf of JP Morgan, this week.
