The extension of the Transport for London scheme will take in the whole of Tower Hamlets and see 2,000 more bikes available.

There will be 4,800 extra docking stations with the Barclays' sponsored bicycles located in areas including Bow, Bethnal Green and Poplar.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson who championed the initiative said: "The expansions east and west will extend the benefits across our city and I'm confident that our investment in this wonderful piece of transport infrastructure will be a huge success."

A typical journey from Canary wharf to Liverpool Street by bike should take 26 minutes.
