Tamara Ecclestone opens Tullett Prebon Boat Show
There was plenty to float the boats of sailing enthusiasts at Excel when the Tullet Prebon Boat Show opened its doors last week.
The annual event with more than 500 exhibitors and 1,000 boats at the exhibition hall was officially opened by heiress and TV presenter Tamara Ecclestone this morning.
We may still be in the grip of an economic crisis but there was still plenty of cash being splashed on boats and kit. Business was brisk on the luxury yacht stands, while there was also a lot of interest in the second-hand market.
It seems the market for British-built craft is buoyant thanks to the weak pound, attracting overseas buyers in their droves.
Champagne was being quaffed in quantities well before the sun was over the yardarm, but it's not all about the high-flying lifestyles of the rich and famous.
British National Jetski champion Jack Moule gave impressive demonstrations of his skills in the dock despite the freezing water, while top sailing stars, including Olympic champions Ben Ainslie and Ian Percy, will be dropping into the show to share their knowledge during the week.
Anyone wanting their own experience could try wakeboarding on the Watersports Action Pool.
The latest gadgets were available to be tested, with some looking as though they'd be more at home in a James Bond film, while landlubbers could learn some practical skills such as rope making courtesy of the Historic Dockyard Chatham.
