Nominations open for Canary Wharf Sports Awards

Lucas Taylor and Perri Shakes Drayton.jpgNominations are open for the Canary Wharf Sports Awards honouring the best talent in the area.

Categories this year are the Individual Achievement Award, Senior Team of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, Group of the Year and the Voluntary Commitment Award, while the outstanding sportsperson will be named Sports Personality of the Year.

Previous winners of the main award include athlete Perri Shakes Drayton, who is hoping for 400m hurdles medal glory at next year's Olympics. She was guest of honour at this year's ceremony, where she presented the trophy to 2011 winner Lucas Taylor.

As well as trophies there are cash prizes up for grabs at the Canary Wharf Group-sponsored event.

CWG's Mimi Tran said: "In just a few months we will have the world's largest sporting event surrounding us and that is an incredible opportunity. Over the past few years we have been doing our best to get young local sportspeople excited about achieving in sport; giving them aspiration, knowledge and facilities to excel.

"There is no doubt that the East End has some of the world's best sporting talent; it is just a matter of recognising and nurturing that talent. This makes the Canary Wharf Sports awards an important annual event for the local community."

Local sports people interested in applying should contact Mimi Tran by emailing mimi.tran@canarywharf.com or calling 020 7418 2448.

Entries close on November 25 and the awards ceremony will be held at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf on February 2.
