Weekend detox

ee-aug26-detox142.JPGAt 8am on Saturday morning a man dressed all in black arrived on my door step bearing gifts.

Unfortunately he had not skied off my roof or descended from a helicopter to bring me a box of chocs. He was delivering my weekend detox.

The packages from Purifyne contained eight fruit and vegetable juices, various supplements, spices and a body scrub mitt all designed to make me feel "happier, healthier and younger for longer".

A detox has always seemed a good idea but I lack the discipline to create suitable meals. Having all the hard work done for me gave me no excuse. The fact it could be done in one weekend sealed the deal.

The regime was very strict and from midnight on Friday until breakfast on Monday, only liquid was to pass my lips, in the form of juices, herbal teas and broth.

Some of the drinks sounded disgusting. There was watermelon, honey, parsley and cabbage liquidised for lunch; pear, celery, ginger and broccoli for tea.

To my surprise, they were really tasty. Drinking spinach was the toughest challenge but after the first few sips, I was sold. I was still drinking broccoli on Monday afternoon.

Saturday was much harder than Sunday. I wanted solid food and started to wish my weekend away just so I could have a piece of toast.

By the evening I had started to settle in to the routine. I was craving texture and the fibrous juice containing apple and yellow peppers went some way to answering that need.
Purifyne representatives were in contact throughout the detox, checking on how I was doing and answering my questions.

The main aim of the programme is to "improve the physical state of your body and help to clarify your mind".

This is not an alternative to exercising, but an accompaniment to your normal fitness regime.

Purifyne claims its detox is a life-changing experience that will "revolutionise your long term relationship with food and your body".

The cynic in me could not see this happening in one weekend but I have been having a rethink. My stomach did not feel bloated and aside from the slightly embarrassing gurgling sounds, there were no adverse side effects. By Sunday I was feeling less hungry and very positive. I had also lost two pounds.

It has made me think more about what I put into my body and the simplicity of the regime would encourage me to do it again. I would just need to find a weekend with nothing else in my diary.

Purifyne offers a programme to suit all lifestyles from a one-day mini to a 14-day weight loss detox. My weekend detox cost £155.
