Preview: Bristol City v Millwall

MillwallLOGO142.jpgMillwall face their first match in the Championship in four years when they travel to Bristol City tomorrow.

The Lions visit Ashton Gate without midfielder Jimmy Abdou, who has an ankle problem, so loan signing Darren Carter could make his debut.

The biggest headline ahead of the game is the league debut of England goalkeeper David James for the home side. He signed for the Robins on a free transfer after failing to agree terms with Portsmouth.

One player James won't have to face is Gary Alexander. The striker left The Den yesterday, signing a two-year contract with League One outfit Brentford.

Alexander made 102 appearances and scored 25 goals for Millwall, including a memorable 35-yard strike in the 2009 play-off final defeat against Scunthorpe.

But James will have to be on his mettle against Steve Morison, who will be looking to celebrate his first international call-up by Wales with a goal.

ff-aug6-kennyjacketWEB142.jpgMeanwhile, Millwall manager Kenny Jackett is relishing the prospect of Championship football but he's under no illusions about how tough it will be for his team.

The Lions clinched promotion with a 1-0 win over Swindon in last May's play-off final, but Jackett has since been planning for life at the higher level.

He said: "There's a big sense of anticipation around Millwall and that's terrific. That comes with success and you'd always have it that way.

"We have no long-term targets. I prefer to break it down a little bit shorter than that. You definitely plan for one game, in terms of the team, but in the squad you plan for batches of games, so we need to be strong enough in the first dozen league games. It will give us a lot of confidence if we can acquit ourselves well."

James Henry.jpgJackett has bolstered his squad, signing winger James Henry (pictured) on a three year deal from Reading and Ipswich striker Kevin Lisbie on a season-long loan. He wanted to add flair and goalscoring to his squad, especially with Shaun Batt ruled out for the start of the season.

He said: "I felt our goal creation and our scoring needed to improve. In pre-season we looked pretty solid but going forward, in terms of people who could score and create, we needed more options. James came into that category.

"Shaun's injury didn't help. Losing him for a considerable amount of time has opened things up on the right. We have Chris Hackett as well, but it does strengthen that right side.

"Kevin's got a very good goalscoring record. I'm very pleased to add him to the squad because I think he will score goals for us."

Jackett promised to carrry on tinkering all season.

He said: "Definitely. I wouldn't say I have one or two players imminently coming in, but creatively and scoring we could step forward again.

"I wasn't going to make wholesale changes. In an ideal world you add steadily as you go along. With the loan system for the Championship it takes the pressure off the transfer windows.

"You pick players up along the way. When you have an injury or loss of form, you have to address that particular position.

"Also good players come up at different times, so you have the opportunity to add those. It ends up where you are turning over and freshening up on a constant basis, but you're not doing it in massive numbers."

Millwall4802.jpgCertainly, Jackett is determined to do well on Millwall's return to the Championship after four years, and he's instilled that determination into his players.

He said: "This is a big opportunity for the players. They've worked very hard for it, and I'm sure they are as hungry as I am to succeed."

One of those players is Paul Robinson and the Millwall captain is aiming for consolidation on their return to the Championship.

Paul Robinson.jpgRobinson, 28, scored the goal that clinched promotion in May's League One play-off final, but he's under no illusions about the size of the challenge facing the Lions.

He said: "We want to establish ourselves as a Championship side. We've been working hard to get back here, and now we are back here we want to work hard and establish ourselves at this level. Everyone's desperate to prove themselves at this level and that's what we'll be aiming to do."

But Robinson wanted some of the euphoria from last season to be carried over by the fans for the new campaign.

He said: "Let's keep on a roll, let's keep going. The crowd were fantastic for us last season. They lifted the lads on many an occasion and the atmosphere here was unbelievable.

"Hopefully we can recreate that atmosphere in the Championship. Again we've got to lift each other on and off the pitch, and I'm sure together as a club we can achieve things at this level."

Robinson said it could be the home fans who make all the difference to how the Lions perform this season.

He said: "The lads speak to other players in the game and they've all said they aren't looking forward to playing at The Den next season. We've just got to continue that.

"It was a fortress for us last season. Our home form was excellent, only losing one home game all season, and we just have to make sure we maintain that level. Make sure it's hostile and an intimidating place to play and that we, as players, urge the fans to recreate that."

Robinson was in the Millwall squad that last played in the Championship, four years ago. He said things are better at the club now.

"That season we got relegated I think I played under five managers," he said. "It was a very unsettled and unstable club. You've got to give full credit to the chairman who came in and the board. They appointed a manager who's built success and works hard.

"It's nice to have a stable club. You've got everyone pulling in the same direction, rather than in previous times when there have been different motives and people pulling in opposite directions and destablising the efforts on the pitch."
