HSBC worker sentenced for laptop theft
An ex-agency worker at HSBC who admitted to stealing three dozen laptops from the Wharf bank has been spared a jail sentence.
Kevin St James Mitchell, 34, of Grant Road Croydon, pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at Thames Magistrates last week.
He took the computers, valued at £7,975, from HSBC's Canada Square offices between July and October last year.
Following an internal audit, the bank discovered the laptops had been sold on eBay and identified Mitchell as the culprit.
Police conducted a search of his home in June and found a number of laptops at the address.
He was arrested for theft of computer equipment and admitted stealing 36 computers from HSBC.
Enquiries into Mitchell's bank statements revealed numerous Paypal transactions to his account running from October 2008 and June 2010.
Magistrates ordered him to work 240 hours community service and pay £85 costs.He was also given a 16 week prison sentence suspended for two years.
