Green: I want to stay at West Ham

green142.jpgEngland goalkeeper Robert Green has restated his desire to stay at West Ham next season.

Green could leave Upton Park after the World Cup, with the Irons cashing in on one of their main assets as co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold look to raise transfer funds. But the 30-year-old wants to stay.

He said: "Of course I want to stay. I've always stated that I'm a happy Hammer. I want to be here and not fighting relegation. I want to come forward with the club.

"The two people in charge have said enough and I'll leave them to do the talking. I've never spoken to them, or half of them, in my life, and certainly never about my future. But if you take what they say, then read what you want into it."

Speaking before manager Gianfranco Zola's sacking yesterday, Green wants the direction of the club sorted out quickly as possible.

He said: "I want a lot of the question marks cleared up. I'm sure the two chairmen will take their chance now to decide where they want to take the club, and who that might involve. There's been a lot of talk and a lot of speculation, and I'm sure come the start of pre-season things will be a lot clearer. That's down to them."

Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester City saw an improved Irons performance, but Green admitted it has been a tough season.

He said: "It has been difficult. The main thing is we've stuck together and come out of it the other side.

"It's fortunate there were three poor teams below us, but we clung in there and got the results when we needed to and sacrificed a lot in terms of playing style. It wasn't ideal but we came out of it and will come back stronger.

"Against City, we could play with a bit more freedom and the intensity wasn't quite there so much. The games before have been tight and not much football played, but we got the results we needed. With five games to go we'd have taken that."
