Wharfinger: Docklands Light Railway

The DLR has been in a state of constant expansion since its inception in 1982 when the emerging Docklands developments demanded a dedicated transport link.

The original layout of the network saw routes from Island Gardens via Poplar to Stratford and, to the West, to Tower Gateway.

The extension to Bank was approved in 1986 - a year before the Queen opened the railway - and was completed in 1991.

The Beckton extension was approved in 1989 - the same year that an extension towards Lewisham was proposed. The former was completed in 1994 and the latter five years later in 1999.

Canary Wharf station opened in 1991 and the DLR took delivery of 70 new rail cars.
In the late '90s the process of applying for permission for the City Airport extension began. The line was finally delivered in 2005 and four years later the Woolwich extension opened.

As the DLR prepares for three-car trains, the Canning Town to Stratford link is under construction with a completion date set in time for the 2012 Olympics.
