Shadwell Basin victim named

Police have named the man who was found dead in Shadwell Basin on Friday morning as Ibrahim Gharib.

The Fire Brigade, police and ambulance service were called to the scene on Thursday at 9.30pm. Ibrahim, a 20-year-old from E1, was discovered in the basin on Friday morning.

A post-portem gave the cause of death as drowning.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and are appealing for witnesses.

They say a man and a 17-year-old girl were on the waterside at the time of the incident and became involved in an altercation.

- A 20-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection with incident. He was released on police bail until April 15.
