Gordon Brown has warned of tough times ahead for the nation's economy, in a speech at Reuters on Wednesday morning.

The Prime Minister also used the Canary Wharf event to announce the Government would lay out its budget plans on March 24.

He said there was an urgent need to reduce the country's debt but warned against doing too much too quickly.

"Although the economy is now growing, recovery is in its early stages - and remains fragile," he said.

"There will be many months ahead of conflicting statistics, false hopes and mixed signals."

The PM said he aims to save more than £3billion by 2013-14.

Brown also said there would be a freeze on senior civil and military staff pay, as well as that of judges, doctors and dentists.
