Charlton 2 Gillingham 2

The draw against Gillingham was a catharsis for the suffering on many levels.

Charlton fans, permanantly scarred by their team's demise from European hopefuls to third tier play-off contenders in recent years, let their team know just how they felt about Saturday's failure to take all three points.

It certainly wasn't the first time over this four year period that Addicks supporters have shown their displeasure in such a way.

But the crushing capitulation at Millwall coming just a week before meant the manager and players took a full chorus of boos down the tunnel with them at both full-time and half-time.

Parkinson, meanwhile, responded by finally letting off steam in the press room.

Fair enough. Parkinson was left with the burden of expensive and ineffective remains from the doomed Pardew tenure.

He has had to cobble together a team made up of many who were lured to The Valley on little more than the prospect of returning Charlton to former glories.

Many point to the fact Parkinson was Alan Pardew's assistant for much of this period but those who know Pardew will tell you he is a doer rather than a listener.

"I understand the Millwall defeat was a bad one for everybody at the club," said Parkinson.

"There's no excuses for that defeat. We made some terrible errors which gifted the opposition goals and that can have a demoralising effect on a team.

"However, I think there is an air around the place of a lack of understanding of what I as a manager have had in terms of resources to put this team together.

"I've been a supporter myself and seen a lot of football. I've stood on terraces and sat in the stands, and think I can identify when a team is giving their all and been unlucky.

"Today, to come in at half-time one goal down, I think everyone thought how are we not winning that game, but we weren't."

There was further bad news for the Addicks when Parkinson revealed Kelly Youga, despite playing a reserve game in midweek as part of his rehabilitation following a knee injury, is unlikely to play this season.

On the pitch on Saturday it was striker David Mooney who was showing fans the personal frustration he has endured.

He celebrated his second half equaliser - a classy turn and strike into the top corner - by cupping an ear to the fans who have been less than supportive to the loan man's efforts.

The Irishman has become an easy target for The Valley boo-boys due to a three or four gilt-edged misses over recent weeks.

However, Parkinson believes Mooney has the quality and the ability to get the Addicks back on the winning path, especially after leading scorer Deon Burton's season was put in doubt due to a suspected medial ligament injury half-way through the first period.

And the likelihood of Mooney adding to his five goals this season can only be increased by a passionate support.

It was something Darren Randolph, who came on in goal for the groin strain afflicted Rob Elliot, was keen to highlight.

He said: "I understand they get frustrated but they need to know it's harder for the players when you've got your own fans getting on your back.

"As a player it becomes twice as hard. Moons was getting a bit of stick and I was buzzing for him when he scored.

"That's just the lift he needed and then everyone got behind him."

It was Randolph who Charlton had to thank for a point, making a superb point blank save when the scores were tied.

It had all started brightly for the Addicks who when a long-range effort from Frazer Richardson sneaked past Alan Julian in the Gills goal.

But the Addicks were soon reeling from two goals conceded before half-time, thanks to an Andy Barcham long range thunderbolt and a tap-in from Dennis Oli.

In the end, Mooney salvaged a point from the Addicks, but the side will have to raise their game for a tough visit to seventh placed Huddersfield next week.

Charlton: Elliot (Randolph 46), Richardson, Borrowdale, S Sodje, Dailly; Sam, Semedo, Racon (Reid 79) Bailey; Mooney, Burton (A Sodje 43).

Gillingham: Julian; Lewis, Nutter, Dennehy, Richards; Miller, Jackman, Weston (Jackson 73), Barcham; Oli, Howe (Walker 82).
