A tailoring service that suits the Wharf

suitsthatfit142.JPGAre you tired of that old off-the-peg suit you slip into for work every day but worry about the cost of having one tailor made in these straitened economic times?

Well, the answer could lie in the form of A Suit That Fits, an online tailor which recently opened in Canary Wharf.

It provides hand-tailored suits for a fraction of the cost of Savile Row's finest, with prices starting from just £150.

The Wharf went to meet the company's Canary Wharf style adviser Shilpi Gupta at their office in 25 Canada Square. With eight years tailoring experience, Shilpi provides expert advice for those unfamiliar with the process of acquiring a made-to-measure suit.

"The beauty of it for our customers here, who often don't have a lot of time, is once they have been measured up and bought a suit from us they can order things online."

After all the necessary measurements have been taken and entered onto an online database, customers browse a range of fabrics.

There is a bewlidering range of options for suits and linings, but in Shilpi's expert hands the process is surprisingly quick as she is full of helpful advice.

She said: "The colours really inspire me. I spend a lot of time at street markets where I can find the fashion element to incorporate into a suit.

"The challenge is to match something with a classic suit, but it can be done and it's always satisfying to find something a bit different to make a suit unique."

The service also gives customers the option of further customising their suit, with extras such as buttonholes and monograms. The suits are tailored in Nepal before being shipped back to the UK for a first fitting to check on sleeve lengths, waist sizes and the like.

If alterations are needed the suit is sent off again, this time to the company's headquarters in south London. Otherwise the suit is ready to take away there and then.

And if you have any problems with it within the first two months the company will sort it out free of charge. The whole process takes between six and eight weeks, and business is booming.

"We're getting a lot of customers coming back as it's so easy to order new clothes online. Once your details are recorded in the database you can order yourself a suit of any style or colour and know it's going to arrive ready-to-wear within weeks."

Polywool mixes for £300 a pop and no discernable tailoring involved, I'll pass.

I believe the polywool mixes sell for less than £200 Jim, for £300 you're more likely to earn yourself an all wool suit, perhaps even a birdseye!

As a former customer with a £400 polywool suit with two pairs of trousers I disagree.
