IN A NUTSHELL
Same, same but every so slightly different to all the other glossy young ladies who have been self consciously styled for the post art school scene.
REVIEW
If Marina Diamandis had been first out of the gate, she might have made more of an impact.
Unfortunately, she is limping along behind art-pop lovelies and fellow Kate Bush-ophiles Florence And The Machine and Bat For Lashes.
Her debut album is a mixed bag of catchy choruses and nonsense lyrics. Appearing to have opted for the song writing method that involves throwing a whole bunch of words at the wall and arranging those that stick into vaguely comprehensible sentences, she offers up a total of 13 tracks.
Take Seventeen for example: "Used to be a major scale, But the melody went stale, Musical cacophony let, Insy-winsy-spider free." Maybe it is all a bit high-brow, after all, great poetry can require some lengthy analysis.
Marina also has a go at puns too, with titles such as The Shampain Sleeper and Hermit The Frog. Such razor sharp witticisms are accompanied by more vacuous sentiments: "Drinking champagne, a bottle to myself, savour the taste of fabricated wealth."
There is no denying she has a beautiful voice but whooping like a monkey and warbling as if she has a mouth full of cotton wool is a bit too stage school.
Marina is pretty, kooky and undoubtedly outspoken so chances are she will go far and her music will grace many adverts for fast cars.

You can't even put Marina and the Diamonds and Bat for Lashes in the same league. Did you see Marina on Jonathan Ross? The lyrics were infantile and very Euro-trashy. Natasha Khan of BfL, by contrast is imaginative and doesn't try to impersonate PJ Harvey nor does she try and gain publicity through faux political lyrics. Khan's ethereal voice is capable of both enthralling and relaxing the listener - a rare talent. 2/5 is a compliment.
