Shell reveals plans for Canary Wharf move
Shell is in negotiations with Canary Wharf Group to relocate to Docklands for the next 10 years.
The petrol giant, which is currently based near Waterloo, is hoping to move to 40 Bank Street when it starts redeveloping its current offices next year.
It has been looking at a number of temporary locations since initial redevelopment plans for its UK headquarters came up.
A deal is yet to be signed for Bank Street but it is the area which Shell is focusing on.
A spokeswoman for the company said: "Shell has been looking for potential office locations for temporary office space from mid 2011
"We can now confirm that we are in negotiation for space at Bank Street in Canary Wharf. We don not expect a final decision for some time."
The company was keen to stress that the move, which is estimated to include about 2,000 staff, would only be temporary and that South Bank remained its long-term London home.
She said: "We have a redevelopment project for the South Bank site which runs over the next decade. During 2011 we intend to relocate some staff in London to facilitate this project.
"Shell has no permanent plans to leave the Tower building on the South Bank and will remain a major employer in the area with established connections to the local community."
The company is yet to finalise plans for the South Bank redevelopment.
Completed in 2003, Heron Quays-based 40 Bank Street is currently used by companies including Allen & Overy, Barclays Capital and ANZ Bank.
Canary Wharf Group would not comment on the news.
